Incorporate In 1931, And Based In Denver The Company Developed And Produced The American Gyro Crusader
Originally Involved In The Production Of Aviation Accessories, The Company Branched Out Into Aeronautics.
The Crusader Was A Small, Futuristic Airplane That Astonished And Amazed The Aviation World During The Great Depression. Its Magic Touched The Hearts And Minds Of All Who Came To Know It, Including Luminaries Like William Randolph Hearst, Jr.; Amelia Earhart; And Howard Hughes.
It Was Originally Called The Shelton Flying-Wing, Although It Did Not Resemble Any Later Flying Wing Types. It Was An All-Metal Airplane, With Twin-Boom, Twin-Engine, Twin-Empennage, Much Like The Soon-To-Be Manufactured P-38. The Engines Were Two 125hp Menasco C-4s.
After Wind Tunnel Testes, The AG-4 Was Developed.
The American Gyro AG-4 Crusader Was An Aluminum Skinned Four Place Low-Wing Twin Engine Aircraft With Fixed Conventional Landing Gear, Twin Tail Booms With Individual Rudders, And A Teardrop Shaped Fuselage. The Wing Uses Trailing Edge Flaps And 25 Gallon Fuel Tanks Are Mounted In Each Wing Root. Retractable Landing Gear Were Also Tested On The Model.
The Aircraft Was Funded From Stock Issue In The Crusader Aircraft Corporation, A Parent Of The American Gyro Company.
In 1936, American Gyro Sold The Plans For The Crusader To The Timm Aircraft Company, Which Proposed To Build A Retractable-Gear AG-7. However, Financing Problems Prevented Any Further Development Or Production.
The Crusader Aircraft Corporation Filed For Bankruptcy In 1938, But American Gyro Hung On Independently Through The 1940's.
