    Description

This is an amazingly bright morganite round, with a light peach color and outstanding brilliance.  It was custom cut for me by the late John Dartez, an award-winning master cutter, and his sheer mastery comes through very clearly in this stone.  It's rare to see a beryl perform like this.  The stone does have one small internal fracture, but because of the cut it is not very visible.  The rough was sourced from Nigeria, which is currently producing some of the best natural morganite rough in the world.  It measures 9.2 x 9.2 x 6.5 mm, and weighs in at 3.01 carats.
Morganite is the pink to peach-pink variety of the mineral beryl.  Its color ranges from a deep, near-orange to a light pure pink, with everything in between.  Other famous beryl varieties include rich green emerald, blue to blue-green aquamarine, yellow heliodor, and white goshenite.  Unlike those other gems, which have been well-known from early antiquity, morganite is a relative newcomer to the gem scene.  It was first discovered in Madagascar in 1910, and subsequently named in honor of the famed J. P. Morgan, who was a major patron and enthusiast of the gem world.  Since then, morganite has also been found in Maine, California, Brazil, Afghanistan and a variety of locales across Africa.  It has only grown in popularity over the years, to the point that some have taken to calling it 'pink emerald' (though using this misnomer is a great way to give a gemologist a headache).
Because morganite is a variety of beryl, it is quite hard (8 on the moh's scale).  This makes it a very popular stone, even in rings.
