Description
Tyrannosaurus rexLarge Maxillary Tooth
66 Million Years BP
Late Maastrichitan
Late Cretaceous
Hell Creek Formation
Harding Co., South Dakota
Fitted with large, serrated, round teeth in both its upper and lower jaws, T. rex was capable of literally punching through even the bone of its prey. To do that, its teeth needed a long and massive root. Like all other dinosaurs, T. rex continually grew new teeth, shedding the old, worn teeth on a regular basis. By the time the tooth was ready to be shed, its root had been completely reabsorbed. Because this tooth has a root, it was not a shed tooth, but was in the mouth of the animal when it died.
