Description

Based on the Alexander Pushkin story "The Captain's Daughter," this seagoing actioner is set in Russia during the reign of Catherine the Great. Russian ensign GEOFFREY HORNE, banished by VIVECA LINDFORS (as Catherine) to a distant outpost, saves the life of VAN HEFLIN, the leader of a peasant uprising. Allowed to escape, Horne tries to warn of Heflin's insurgent plans, but the Russian generals refuse to listen. When he attempts to remove Heflin's daughter SILVANA MANGANO from harm's way, Horne is accused of desertion. This time it is Heflin's turn to rescue Horne by convincing Viveca that the man is innocent of treason. Brilliantly staged battles scenes and period decor, plenty of action, wet and dry, and a giant cast in this rare 1958 adventure, which also stars ROBERT KEITH, AGNES MOOREHEAD, OSKAR HOMOLKA, HELMUT DANTINE, VITTORIO GASSMAN, LAURENCE NAISMITH and many more.
